More pictures....The Ghan
The Ghan is one of Australia's great railway adventures. It took more than 50 years for the line to reach Alice Springs from Adelaide in 1929, and the final 1500km of track to Darwin was only inaugurated in February 2004. The train got its name from the Afghani cameleers who originally pioneered outback transport. I travelled in a compact cabin in 'Gold Kangaroo' class.
Yes, it's a "Compact Cabin". If you're in Red Kangaroo with a bunk, there are two of you in here. The bed folds down as if by magic when you're at dinner.
Ooh look, a fold-down sink!
The table, bearing the essential traveller's kit of two phones, sunnies and The Ghan complimentary goody bag :D
Some woman.
The outback.
The local wildlife.
Breakfast in the dining car.
That woman again.
